Data in Context
Fall 2023, Fall 2024 (upcoming)
Rutgers University
Data in Context offers a deep dive into the intersection of data and society, leveraging AI and algorithmic insights to understand the ethical, legal, and social implications inherent in data science. Students develop the ability to critically assess and articulate the relevance of data for organizational or societal challenges. A significant focus is placed on understanding the evolution and impact of quantification and data-fication from a social and political perspective. The curriculum emphasizes critiquing the ethical, legal, and social aspects of data collection, processing, and algorithm development. Students will also learn to design practical data science applications in communication, information, and media contexts, integrating AI and algorithms to address social, structural, and political economic concerns. The course culminates in the ability to conduct an algorithm audit and communicate outcomes effectively. Data in Context was designed by Dr. Katherine Ognyanova, Dr. Caitlin Petre, and Dr. Vivek Singh of the Rutgers School of Communication and Information Science.

Introduction to Social Media
Spring 2023, Dr. Sarah Shugars

In doing so, we consider the role of individual choice, social influence, technological influence, and how these three perspectives can be combined. In this course, students explore the implications of social media for personal relationships, youth culture, organizations, social research, and personal privacy.
